Day 30 - Magor to Bristol
Date:
Sunday 28th September 2009
Distance: 38.58
Service
station breakfast not to be recommended though and we left early after very
little calories. Surprisingly we pedalled really well again, on cycle-way for
the most part and a little less flat. Twice there were “road” blocks and we had
to retrace steps or manoeuvre ourselves through fences and if we had been
forewarned we would have gone a different route. Still the way has become
prettier at this point so we didn’t mind too much.
Passed
by Caldicot Castle that looked worth a visit if we had time. Lonely fields with
Private shooting signs and an escaped bull hurried us onwards. We were ready
for our steak pie at the Anchor in Pill after the first long hill of the trip
and many more than half the miles of the day covered.
It
was a day of bridges. We could see them across the Severn Estuary then later we
crossed the massive Severn (into England) and then Avon Road Bridges. From
Avonmouth we travelled down the gorge, as the track went under trees and rocks
beside the river to Bristol. We passed under the picturesque Clifton Suspension
Bridge.
Bristol
has a grand station entrance and we took the lift for the platform. One of the
passengers waiting for a train to London was very interested in our tandem.
Then I recognised him as someone who made a documentary called “Take a seat”
about his journey from Alaska to Peru on a tandem like ours, picking up
passengers to “stoke” on route. We took his email address and did a photo shoot
then we caught our train back to Cardiff arriving at about 4.30. See http://Takeaseat.org
